Formal Structures

It is strongly suggested that the leader implement an obligatory attendance policy. A single absence is acceptable, but additional absences should require the participant to repeat the Academy. Consistent attendance is critical to the learning process and to the formation of a group identity. This is the basis for group sharing and peer support. Absenteeism undermines these important values. The group identity also prepares the members for actual community building later in their process as homeowners. Since many banks now require homeowner education prior to lending, this is an excellent incentive for participant attendance.

It is also suggested that the Academy run on 12 successive weeks. The three month period allows the applicants to create new behaviors and to discuss the success and failure of these with people undergoing the same process.

It is important to run the classes on the same day of the week. People demonstrate higher attendance rates when the class is held on a specific day and time.

The Campbell Soup Homeowner Academy is a starting point for successful low income homeownership. It is not intended to stand-alone. The success of the Academy model depends on a three phase effort of education, counseling, and community organizing.
