Housing Development

In 1985, the Society began the first phase of its renewal campaign by rehabilitating abandoned houses and selling them to low– and moderate-income families in Camden, New Jersey. Since then, the Carpenter Society has developed over 300 units of affordable housing in East Camden. Funding sources for this campaign and subsequent projects include grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, the City of Camden and its Redevelopment Agency; donations and loans from The Reinvestment Fund and private lenders.

The largest share of housing developed by the Carpenter Society consists of more than two hundred fifty vacant homes rehabilitated for single-family owner occupancy.
